Industrial and Medical Electronics Trends

Innovation and cost savings are now the key growth drivers for industrial companies worldwide.  Introducing more and more electronics and intelligence into their products is mandatory to survive.
As a result, the global industrial and medical electronics production will start a new growth cycle, which is forecast to reach 6.5% in average over the period 2012-2017.

Demand today is outweighed by major energy concerns. This modifies the expected technological road-map and the renewal demand routines. A growing part of the market will turn towards smart energy saving systems.

Industrial and medical electronics can be divided into the following 5 segments.

1. Transportation: electronics equipment for railways, marine and off-road vehicles applications, (excluding automotive electronics, aerospace, and defense systems).

2. Power electronics: includes UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply), labs and industrial power supplies, solar inverters, and power distribution networks as a first segment, solar panels and electronic lighting as two other ones.

3. Automation: control equipment for factory and utility automation on one hand, and building and home automation for the second one.

4. Medical electronics: imaging systems, implants, other diagnosis and therapy equipment.

5. Instrumentation, measuring and test equipment: Automatic Test Equipment (ATE), general instrumentation, telecommunications instrumentation, metering.

Industrial electronic equipment production breakdown by segments in 2017:

PCB Arrays & Panels

The terms Array and Panel have been used interchangeably by various sectors. The PCB Fabrication industry normally uses the term Array to mean a pallet which contains multiple copies of the same circuit board.

At Electronic Interconnect, we design Arrays daily to meet the best yields of our PCB fabrication processes, and to meet the requirements of our customers. We can design with V-Scoring parameters, CNC Routing parameters, as well as a combination of both of these processes. By engineering PCB Arrays at our location, we are able to not only pass on the savings to our customers, but we also use our years of experience to design Arrays to result in trouble-free Assembly after fabrication! EZ Amp - an op-amp experimenter board

The EZ Amp provides a convenient manner in which to experiment with operational amplifiers and to prototype circuit applications using them. Circuit patterns are provided for mounting op-amps that use a 14-pin DIP package. This includes a very large selection of standard part types.

In electronic prototyping, it is convenient to have the use of some mechanism to add circuits in a non-permanent manner, for testing. There exist many so-called “prototyping boards”, consisting of a sea of push-pin contacts that allow a circuit to be built in a very temporary manner.

Although prototyping boards are useful tools, they do not provide suitable connections for sensitive circuits involving amplifiers. Poor quality contacts and long lead wires may negatively affect the performance of the circuit. Even when the prototyping board provides adequate technical performance, it is not acceptable for inclusion as a design element for higher level prototyping.

The EZ-Amp provides a new step between “haywiring” and the final circuit. It can be used to breadboard multiple channels of analog signal conditioning in a manner suitable for all but the final step of packaging.

Electronic Interconnect offers an Engineering Service in designing a multilayered controlled-impedance stackup

Advancements in technology have driven PCB Designers & Engineers to seek improvements in system development & develop strategies to overcome signal communication issues. To this end, it has become increasingly evident that a solid & sound PCB design can greatly mitigate such issues and ultimately lead to better signal integrity.

If your design requires specific impedance properties, for example a differential impedance of 90 ohms, & you need to design the PCB which can meet this criteria, then you'll need to investigate & calculate the best trace-width, trace-space, layer-to-layer spacing, as well as which PCB materials should be used.

We are taking this opportunity to announce that Electronic Interconnect has begun providing an Engineering Service in designing a multilayered controlled-impedance stackup to fit your design targets. You can either consult us before starting the design or if you've already finished the PCB Layout, then we can take the information from your Gerber data & design a stackup to meet the desired impedance goals. Our extensive PCB fabrication knowledge coupled with the awareness of our shops tolerances helps us deliver stackup solutions which can best fit your controlled-impedance designs. Electronic Interconnect provides Design for Manufacturing (DFM) services

Electronic Interconnect provides Design for Manufacturing (DFM) services automatically for new PCB orders, to detect, identify, and fix design problems before they reach the prototype or production stage. This saves money for customers and prevents manufacturing problems downstream, according to Shehryar Abbasi of EI’s Engineering Department. EI is a PCB fabricator, serving design engineers and contract assemblers, providing all types of PCBs from single‐sided to complex multilayer boards and Surface Mount (SMT) boards from prototype through production.

Before any PCB design goes to even tahe prototyping stage, the engineers at EI subject that design to a number of reviews and checks to make sure that the PCB that the customer requests can actually be built, Abbasi says. Quite often, designers will submit the artwork for a PCB that is superb in concept, but may not be compatible with the limits of the manufacturing process.

“A PCB design may also create issues for the assembly stage, such as a lack of solder mask between component leads that might cause bridging and shorts during the soldering process, when components are attached to the bare board. All of these things must be looked at in light of DFM, Design for Manufacturability and DRC, Design Rule Check principles and limitations. We don’t run files ‘as is’; every board that we make initially goes through a comprehensive DFM check” Abbasi says.DFM at EI includes the following checks:

  • Soldermask clearances ‐ distance to keep mask away from solderable areas;
  • Soldermask bridges ‐ mask between SMDs to prevent solder bridging during later assembly;
  • Trace/Pad Widths & Spacing ‐ minimum spacing and trace widths, trace width tolerances allowed;
  • Copper finish ‐ to determine how much artwork compensation needs to be done for chemical processes.

These are the primary checks, but there are many others. For more information and a complete listing, visit www.eiconnect.com.
